Booklet for Fathers in Blended Families

One Step at a Time is a 40-page illustrated booklet published for fathers in blended families, published by the Father Involvement Initiative - Ontario Network (FII-ON) in 2007. The booklet, one of a series of father education booklets produced by FII-ON  provides information on numerous topics of interest to fathers in blended families including:

  • the needs of children in  blended and step-families
  • how child development affects relationships and needs in stepfamilies
  • developing relationships with step-children
  • how fathers can support step-mother/stepchild relationships
  • how step-parents can work effectively as a team

As with previous booklets produced by FII-ON, the text of One Step at a Time is embedded with short anecdotes designed to illustrate the challenges of being a father in a blended family and demonstrate approaches which can help fathers to understand and navigate them. Each of the stories used in One Step at a Time is based on real life experiences of step-parents interviewed by the author, John Hoffman. Hoffman is a freelance journalist, regular contributor to Today's Parent magazine and a member of the FIRA Steering Committee.

One Step at a Time. A guide for fathers living in blended families is available through the FII-ON website (http://www.cfii.ca/fiion/index.htm) along with four other booklets:

Involved Fathers. A guide for today's dad.

Full-time Dad. Part-time Kids. A guide for recently separated and divorced fathers.

Daddy…Come Play With Me. A father's guide to play with young children.

Kids We Can Count On. A father's guide to building character in children.

Daddy I Need You.  A father's guide to early childhood brain development.

FII-ON is a network of Ontario-based organizations and individuals who are working to support father involvement in families and develop father-inclusive approaches to programs and services for families with young children. FIRA and FII-ON are separate organizations, but some members of FII-ON are also involved with FIRA.
