It’s time to think about registering for FIRA’s conference, Father Involvement 2008, Diversity, Visibility, Community, which will take place in Toronto October 22- 24, 2008.
To take advantage of the "early bird" registration fee, registration information and full payment must be received on or before September 15. We also advise that you book your room at the same time. We have negotiated a special rate on a limited number of rooms at our host hotel, the Delta Chelsea Hotel in downtown Toronto. For full information about registration and accommodation click here.
The program for Father Involvement 2008, Diversity, Visibility, Community is
falling into place nicely. We are very excited to announce that our
presenters will include top father involvement scholars from Canada,
Australia, Finland, Japan, South Korea, Chile, and the U.S.
In past bulletins we introduced our four keynote speakers. Rob Palkovitz, Scott Coltrane, Wanda Thomas Bernard and Andrea Doucet.
Here are a few more of the international presenters you will meet at our conference.
Joseph Pleck (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) has been
a leading fatherhood researcher since the early 1980s. Along with
Michael Lamb, Joe Pleck originated the concept of paternal involvement,
which continues to be the most fundamental construct in contemporary
research on fathering. His presentation will unravel the crucial
question: Why does father involvement promote child and adolescent
well-being? Dr. Pleck’s address will kick-start a very unique exercise
called a World Café, which is a way for a very large group of people to engage in a facilitated “conversation.”
Other international presenters will include:
Richard Fletcher (University of Newcastle, Australia) will discuss the
conclusions and processes involved in his recent Realist Review of
research linking father’s involvement and family well-being.
Carol Pape-Cowan and Phillip Cowan, University of California, Berkeley, will describe methodology and findings from a randomized, clinical trial of a preventative intervention designed to increase positive father involvement in low income Mexican-American families.
Jouko Huttunen (University of Jyväskylä, Finland) will present a paper on long-term implications of father’s paternity leave.
Young In Kwon (Yonsei University, South Korea) will examine the invisibility of fathers in family-friendly work policies.
Scott North (Osaka University, Japan) will present on challenges to father involvement in Japanese families.
Father Involvement 2008, Diversity, Visibility, Community will
also make history as it showcases the largest ever gathering of
Canadian father involvement experts at an international event, including strong representation
from FIRA. Our conference will feature more than three dozen presentations from Canadian
scholars and community practitioners. Seventeen of those presentations
will be related to FIRA’s five-year community university research
alliance, which included studies of seven sub-populations of fathers:
• fathers of children with special needs
• gay/bi/queer fathers
• immigrant fathers
• indigenous fathers
• new fathers
• separated and divorced fathers
• young fathers
And even that’s not all.
We can't list the entire program in this space but here’s
just a sampling of the many other father involvement issues to be dealt
with in panels, paper presentations and roundtables:
• father involvement in breastfeeding
• programs designed to enhance father involvement
• father involvement in men who must travel for work
• incarcerated fathers
• how fathers are affected by infant sleep
• fathers affected by post partum depression
